The Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS receiver with heart rate monitor is a multi-purpose training tool designed primarily for runners and cyclists that lets you know how far and how fast you're travelling during your workout.

The new model also functions as a heart rate monitor which tracks your current, average and maximum heart rates.

The display screen presents your choice of near 40 different data fields for variables such as current and average pace, heart rate, distance covered, lap times and more.

A sampling of over 1500 customers who bought the device found that two thirds of them gave it 5 stars out of 5 and another 20% gave it 4 stars.

The most popular feature of the 305 is the customizable screen display.

This lets you choose the variables you want to track and presents only those variables on the screen.

The fewer the variables, the larger they appear on the display, which makes it easier to view at a glance while exercising.

Customers like the rapid satellite acquisition. They find it to be very accurate when compared to previously measured routes and it functions exceptionally well even in areas that GPS devices tend to be less reliable, such as heavily wooded areas or around tall buildings.

The flawless heart rate sampling is a hit with runners and cyclists who use heart rates to guide their training.

Another popular feature is the computer integration capability which allows you to download your training data directly to your PC or MAC through the USB cable.

You can automatically update your training log and compare data cumulatively and from workout to workout.

The primary downside was the current pace readout which is not as smooth as some customers would prefer. The current pace was found to vary by as much as 3 minutes per mile at times.

This is a substantial variation and seems to get worse under tree cover.
